Nov28 - Dec 2

ELA - For our writing, we wrote about the best part of me (last week). This week we focused on our last walking story which was about seasons. Students picked one season, and described it using their 5 senses as well as emotions towards that season. We really emphasized descriptive words we could use for each of our 5 senses as well as similes.

Math - This week in math, we did addition. The two strategies we went over was expanding/breaking the numbers a part then adding each place value with each other. For example, 456 + 345, we broke each number down (400 50 6 and 300 40 5) then added the hundreds with hundreds, tens with tens, ones with ones (400 + 300, 50 + 40, 6 + 5) then smashed them all together. (700 + 90 + 11 = 801). The main hurdle for this method is understanding that 400 + 300 is just 4 + 3 but adding the two zeros/hundreds as well as knowing addition facts under 20 really well. The second method was stacking, this is the way that most of us have been taught in school. Again, for this method, the main challenge is the addition under 20 as well as knowing where to put the regrouping numbers/where to put the 1 and 3 if we got 13.

Science - We continued on with our rocks and minerals unit, we talked about components and properties of soil as well as how it is made. Today, we made crystals out of borax and hot water. After they cool over the weekend, they will learn about crystal shapes and take them home!

Gym - For this week, gym consisted of scooters as well as scoop balls. We practiced passing, catching, and shooting. We played a game where it's similar to dodgeball, but students are aiming at bowling pins instead of each other. We also did "pirate ship" where teams would be on a 'ship' (hoola hoop) and they would have to use cannons (scoops and balls) to knock down the other ships.

Reminders

1. I have sent leveled reading books home on Tuesday this week as promised. Please read them with your student, if they are too hard or easy let me know so that I can read it with them and reevaluate. I have had some students come up to me telling me they read chapter books and that these books are easy, but they need to understand difficulty is not equivalent to length. Starting this coming week, I have made groups where we will do guided reading each day of the week as well as work on the phonics we talked about during PTC.

2. This coming week is book fair meaning there will be no book exchange on Tuesday. I have sent a flyer home about the book fair on Tuesday so please take a look at that. Because our library time is on Tuesday, this week, our book fair time will be on Tuesday. If your child is purchasing a book, please bring money on Tuesday as that is our designated time.

3. I forgot to remind them, but please bring back the black folders on Monday as I wanted to give out some under 20 facts practice, and some 3 by 3 digits word problems.

4. If you are looking for academic resources (practice sheets, reading comp pages) please please please email me and I would love to send you some.
